Casualty figures

British casualties for the month of August 1916 totalled 127,000 – a fifth of all those killed in the two years of the war so far.

The Somme Offensive, which began on 1 July and would last until 18 November 1916, was the largest battle fought on the Western Front during the war. It remains one of the bloodiest battles in human history.
