Richmond roll of honour 1915
While today people across Richmond and the UK fell silent in remembrance, in 1915 the end of the war looked further away than ever.
The initial enthusiasm for the cause had fallen as casualty figures rose and the stalemate deepened. According to Commonwealth War Graves Commission records, by the end of 1915, 189378 men had died. This included casualties from the major battles at Loos and Gallipoli, as well as at sea and in the air.
Many Richmond men served in the local East Surrey Regiment. In 1915, 19 local recruits from the East Surreys were being mourned, including five teenagers, as well as men from the area serving in other regiments in the army and navy.
