The shortage of workers impacts daily life

As the war progressed, one local impact was the shortage of staff and workers. In the early war, before women began to make a significant contribution to the workforce, this made everyday life difficult for the people of Richmond.

On 14 August the Richmond & Twickenham Times carried an article rebuking the “Selfish Shoppers – ladies who are annoyed by slow service in shops when shopkeepers are doing their best in the face of a manpower shortage.”
